front entrance to Stefan Mann in Scottsadale, AZ

A Name With a Story Behind It

Stefan Mann opened in 1979 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Founder Stephen Sanders chose the name to honor his parents, Stefan for his father and Mann for his mother’s maiden name.

Stores followed in the Borgata of Scottsdale, the Dallas Galleria, Trump Tower in New York City, and here at el Pedregal. When Mr. Sanders semi-retired to Carefree, he made this his one and only location. He passed away in November 2015 at nearly 96 years old.

His idea of a good store has not changed since: real customer service, quality merchandise, and pieces you will not find everywhere else. Patrice, Demaris and Martha are here seven days a week and are delighted to help.

We find items as unique as each of our customers. That was the aim in 1979 and it still is.

For Women

There is a moment when you slip something on and it simply works. The drape falls right, the color does something kind to your face, and you stop adjusting it. That is what we shop for. Lightweight cottons that breathe through a Carefree summer, knits soft enough to live in, and pieces cut for real women rather than a sample size.

Blouses and Dresses

  • David Cline — beautiful lightweight material, made in the USA, cool against the skin on a hundred-degree afternoon
  • Dolcezza — wearable artwork printed on fabric, so a plain outfit becomes a conversation
  • Gretty Zueger — embroidered blouses made in Peru from Peruvian cotton, where you can still see the hand of the person who made it
  • Escape — 100% Peruvian cotton, easy wear, out of the suitcase and ready to go
  • Carine — designed right here in Scottsdale
  • Vine St. — a newer designer worth watching
  • Multiples — designed and run by an all-women team
  • We also carry Shana, Habitat, Olivia and Peace of Cloth.

Slacks and Jeans

  • FDJ — different styles and silhouettes to fit every body type
  • Tempo — reversible jacket and jeans, two looks from one piece, which travelers love
  • We also carry Tribal and Renuar.

New arrivals land often. Stop in or follow along on Facebook to see what just came through the door.

Shoes and Sandals

  • Andre Assous — sandals with soft leather uppers and cushioned footbeds, made for walking el Pedregal’s stone paths and standing through a long evening without regret
  • Gelato — tie shoes and button boots

Hats

Arizona sun is not a suggestion. Our Wallaroo hats give you UPF 50+ protection in regular and petite sizing, with wide brims that actually shade your shoulders, fedoras and boaters for a lighter look, and western crowns finished with a leather cord. Bands come in ribbon, grosgrain, striped black and white, and the occasional row of beading, in ivory, natural straw, navy, charcoal, red and soft blue. Most have an adjustable inner band so the fit stays right and a chin cord for windy days, and nearly all of them crush flat, go in a suitcase, and come out unbothered.

Scarves

  • Dolma — cashmere that warms without weight
  • Laurel Burch — artist-painted silks in colors you will not find at the mall
  • Dolcezza — the same wearable artwork, in scarf form

Belts

  • Will Leather Goods — full-grain leather with substantial hardware, cut to outlast the trend that inspired it

For Men

A smaller selection, chosen exactly the same way. Nothing here is filler. If it is on the shelf, someone who works here would wear it.

Clothing

  • Tommy Bahama — Bali cotton tees that get softer every wash, polos and dress shirts that still hold a collar through dinner, and slacks and shorts cut for desert heat

Wallets

A wallet is the leather item a man handles most, several times a day, for years. Ours are built for that, in bifolds, trifolds, front-pocket slims, money clips and RFID-blocking styles.

  • Osgoode Marley — cashmere leather, beautifully soft yet durable, that breaks in rather than breaks down
  • Bosca — bridle-tanned hides with a deep polished finish that darkens beautifully with handling
  • Scully — western-tooled styles with hand-detailed edges

Belts

Dress weights for a suit, heavier full-grain for jeans and boots. Bring your waist size, not your pant size, and we will get it right the first time.

  • Torino — Italian-made leathers in the widths that actually fit a belt loop, with solid brass and nickel hardware
  • Will Leather Goods — full-grain and woven styles built to take a beating

Hats

  • Wallaroo — packable sun styles with UPF 50+ protection, shapeable brims and sweatbands that hold up in July
  • American Hat Company — real felt and straw western hats in the crowns you would expect from a company that has been making them for generations

If you are unsure of your size, come in and we will measure you.

Handbags

Handbags are what we are known for. Walk the wall and you hear the difference before you see it, the quiet click of good hardware, the give of a well-tanned hide. We carry them in leather, nylon and fabric, in every size from evening clutch to everyday tote, and we pay as much attention to the inside of a bag as the outside. Pockets, organization and a strap that sits right on the shoulder all matter.

Leather Handbags

  • Mary Frances — collectible and evening bags known for three-dimensional fashion designs
  • Hammitt — unmistakable leather bags and wallets with signature rivets and red zippers and linings
  • Brahmin — in business over 40 years, signature cross-embossed leather in new colors and styles every month
  • Osgoode Marley — cashmere leather that is beautifully soft yet durable, in slings, handbags, totes and business cases
  • ILI — great organizational bags in multiple color combinations
  • Hobo — designed by women for women, with exceptional organization
  • Anuschka — hand-painted leather, no two exactly alike

Nylon Handbags

  • Baggallini — started by two flight attendants, so the pockets and organization are exactly where you want them. Now available in the Securtex travel line with double-cable anti-cut straps, slash-resistant interior panels, locking zippers and RFID protection
  • Hedgren — lightweight bags born in Belgium, with intuitive design and smart functionality

Woven and Fabric Handbags

  • Maruca — tapestry bags and small pouches made in the USA from American tapestry
  • Eric Javits — woven crossbody and shoulder bags with sculptural bamboo and gold-tone handles, engraved nameplates and removable leather straps

Our Leather

Leather is the reason this store exists, and after more than forty years we still choose it the same way. By hand, and by feel.

Pick up a good bag and you know immediately. There is a weight to it. The grain has real depth rather than a pattern printed on the surface. Run a thumb across it and the hide gives slightly, then comes back. It smells like something that was made rather than manufactured.

We look for leather with character. Cashmere-soft finishes that stay durable through years of daily use. Cross-embossed textures that catch the light differently in every color. Hand-painted pieces where no two are ever quite the same. Polished bridle hides that deepen right where your hand rests.

For something rarer, we carry exotic leathers including ostrich, crocodile, alligator and stingray, in personal and business pieces.

Good leather does not stay new. It softens, darkens slightly at the corners, and takes on the shape of how you carry it. That is the point. A well-made bag should look better in five years than it did the day you bought it, and we would rather sell you one piece that lasts than three that do not.

Come in and handle a few. You will know in about ten seconds.

Luggage and Travel

Whether you are flying out of Sky Harbor or driving up to Sedona for the weekend, the right bag makes the whole trip easier. Wheels that roll straight. Handles that lock where you left them. Zippers that do not fight you at the gate.

Luggage

  • Briggs & Riley — the Baseline Collection, winner of Best Luggage Brand in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2025
  • Bric’s — from Italy, lightweight recycled nylon in the X-Collection
  • Baggallini — totes and carry-ons built by people who have spent their working lives in airports

Backpacks, Waistpacks & Slings

For the days you want your hands free. Lightweight technical nylon that wipes clean and packs flat, plus leather styles from the same houses that make our handbags. Padded laptop sleeves, water bottle pockets, cross-body straps that adjust without a fight, and travel security features like locking zippers and slash-resistant panels.

Accessories

The small things that finish an outfit, solve a problem, or make you smile on the way out the door.

Jewelry

  • Local artist Rose Balazs — necklaces, bracelets and earrings, beaded, wire wrapped and wire crocheted
  • Tagua — bracelets, earrings and necklaces made from the tagua nut from Ecuador

Sculptural, colorful and made entirely by hand. The tagua nut polishes to a soft luster and takes color the way nothing manufactured quite does.

Eyewear

Eyebobs. Reading glasses should not feel like an apology. We carry a large variety, a wide range of magnifications, frame shapes and colors, from quietly understated to entirely unmissable. Bold acetates, slim metals, and readers that look like the glasses you would have picked anyway. Try on a stack at the counter. Most people leave with two.

Key Fobs and Charms

Hammitt key fobs, ILI horsehair charms, and My Wallit cats and dogs. The easiest gift in the store, and the fastest way to make a plain bag yours.

Card Cases

RFID aluminum card cases featuring artwork from Renoir, Monet, Klimt and Van Gogh.

Slim enough for a front pocket, secure enough for travel, and pretty enough that you will want to hand it over at the register.

A fantastic boutique that features unique clothing, leather goods and jewelry from local artisans. Stefan Mann is one of the lone surviving businesses in the once-thriving El Pedregal Festival Marketplace, adjacent to (and reportedly owned by) The Boulders resort, which, for reasons inexplicable to those of us who for years enjoyed shopping at this lovely enclave, has chosen to allow the center to become a ghost village. Only a restaurant, art gallery, and Stefan Mann remain, while the rest of the storefronts sit empty (and have since prior to Covid). The shop has a much deserved loyal local following which, presumably accompanied by foot traffic from The Boulders, have kept them going. The owners are lovely and friendly. It is well worth a visit.
